Elementary Russian: Thursday, October 3. Independent work!

Окей... I'm in Finland, giving a paper on contemporary Russian reaction to the film, Gone with the Wind (1939). Yeah, weird, right? Russians reinterpret the film so that it's a film about... Russia! OK howdie!

So.... I'm not in the States. In place of class, in your pjs if you desire... do these три вещи! Three things I want you to learn on your own.

1) I want to reinforce pluralization rules AND the spelling rules.
2) Listen to one dialogue and answer the questions.
3) Introduce the concept of "having" in Russian. I've made a PowerPoint Presentation (WHEEE!). You'll need to produce a few sentences indicating possession.

First, you'll need THIS WORKSHEET. Print it up. Include it in your portfolio for Unit 2.

***
1) Recall that SPELLING RULES are just that: They don't pertain to pronunciation, just correct spelling. (I say: Orthography not phonetics!) There are two spelling rules (out of, like, 3? in all of Russian!) that you'll need this unit: Both rules pertain to pluralization and modifier formation.

Rule 1: The SEVEN LETTER RULE:

After КГХШЩЖЧ (the hushers and the velars), never write –ы always writer -и

Thus, книга-->книги when you otherwise might expect книгы.

Rule 2: The FIVE LETTER RULE:

After ШЩЧЖЦ (the hushers and the traitor), never write an unaccented -o always writer -e

Thus хорОший-->хорОшее (neuter) when you might expect хорошое. BUT: большОе (it's OK here, because the O is under stress.)

Now, go do Drill 1 on the worksheet. When you're finished, listen to this comparison of singular and plural noun phrases. First listen to the plural (which is written out). Then click on the singular link to hear the same phrase, only now singular.  They're really easy! You'll learn to hear the difference between plural and singular.

2. Listen to dialogue 3, reading along with the speaker. (The dialogue is printed on the worksheet.) On the worksheet, TRANSLATE dialogue 3 into English!

3. Ok, what does one do to a PowerPoint?... Witness? Witness this PowerPutin Presentation!  It's pretty good. У меня есть идея! I have an idea! Now, do the last exercise on your worksheet: Give me AT LEAST ten sentences. Ask if I have some item (a telephone!), and then you choose: Yes, I have one. No, I don't.

Wheee!

Сегодня в кабинете... Elementary Russian, Unit 10 Week 1 April 17, 2019

Привет! Салют! Welcome back to the Language Lab.

Не парься! Будь спок, не волнуйся! Chill!

(The word спокойно means calm.. Будь спок! Be calm... you know, like Спок!)

Anyway, read along while listening to dialogues three and five. The word
Назад means "ago"... The first question in dialogue three is kinda stupid... Whose on the picture? I'm on the picture.

Answer the questions on your lab worksheet and have me or the tutor check them.

***

The question На когО вы похОжи (ты похОж/ты похОжа)? means Who do you look like? Literally, "Whom do you go after?" (Похож comes from the verb ходить, to go.)

It uses the accusative case Она похожа на меня, на маму, на Ивана...

For your "little composition" (an assignment for your final portfolio) you'll answer in complete sentences the following questions... Remember, truth telling isn't that important... If you write the answers out now, the tutors can check them.

Come to the tables for some further work!
Присоединяйтесь к нам за стол!

Now, for listening... Давайте послушаем! Let's have a listen. (HEY! It's the perfective case expressing future!)

Listen to this series of statements about how much stuff costs, filling in the blanks with numbers (don't worry about writing out the words). The recording isn't divided (sigh... 5th Edition!Maybe they shoulda fixed this five years ago...) so you'll need to start the recording at 3m47s... That's where ex. 09-02 begins. Here's the listening exercise; you'll find the questions in your lab handout.

When you're finished, когда закончите... К столам! К столам! Get to the tables! You'll find more work on the other side of the handout.

Сегодня в лингафонном кабинете! Unit 2 Week 4 Elementary Russian

Elementary Russian... LAB, Week 4, Unit 2. Understanding Numbers.

Добрый день! Мы рады вас видеть! Good day! Nice to see you.

Because of scheduling and Fall Break, we have a BONUS language lab today!

1) Take your QUIZ on NUMBERS!!!! If you need to prepare, check out the Memrise quiz!

2) Do the listening comprehension on the lab handout... It's listening to numbers.
Б.  Teens and -ties.  Write down the numbers as you hear them.
Г. Номера телефона. Write down the telephone numbers next to the people's names. Notice the fill имя фамилия first name and family name... Russians actually NEVER do refer to people in an official capacity like this... Usually its ФИО (фамилия, имя, отчество)... Oh, well, another error in the book! Notice the person's nickname (прозвище). Надя! Эдик!

3) You'll find a handout with all the dialogues with the tutors. Now, at the tables, in preparation for your ORAL PERFORMANCE TOMORROW, read aloud, with your partner or with any tutor, a couple of the dialogues.

Today is a GREAT chance to have a tutor go over your домашка homework and проверить её check it.

MAKE SURE that you've included EVERY item... Grammar explanations, translations, etc. There is a LOT of homework, all of which needs to be COMPLETE, CHECKED, and CORRECTED by the time you turn in your portfolio.

Sign up for the ORAL PERFORMANCE!!!!  You've signed up, right (Stetson) (ERAU)?

Sign up for your Oral Exam next Thursday!

Sign up here for your Oral Exam... Slots are first-come-first-served, and you'll take your exam with either Dr. Zheltoukhova or Dr. Denner. The SPREES center tutors will be there on Thursday to help you with last minute details... They're a great resource!

Please DO NOT come up before you exam slot.... This is courtesy to your fellow students.

A few years ago, we began to host music from the Russian, East European, and Eurasian area, that wonderful and surprising area we at SPREES call ours. I'm reviving that tradition (and hoping that the other faculty joins me!)... This week, I'm showcasing one of my favorite Georgian bands, 33a (that's its name... 33ა... It doesn't mean anything to me, either...).

Anyway, Georgian music is WILD... totally NOT Western, not Eastern... It's... GEORGIAN. If I have one complaint about Georgian music, it's that it relies a lot on a very small cannon of songs. It tends to be.. a little self-absorbed.

Georgian music exerts a huge influence over the entire region... Nino Katamadze, a Georgian from Adchara who sings largely in Russia, is one of the most popular "Russian" singers in the Russian Federation.

Anyway, I like this 33a song,  აი მთაზედა Ai Mtazeda (something like, "Look, Mountains!" You say that a LOT in Georgia!)... The video is sort of Georgian beauty p0rn... Mountains. Beautiful people and places.
