Russian eating habits Unit 9

Russians in general are much different about eating than most Americans are. Traditionally we have three meals a day. Russia has either three or four meals a day. Most of the time Russians will eat at home instead of going out to eat. The first meal of the day is breakfast and is usually very light. Many Russians believe that eating well in the morning will help increase work productivity. So the Russians will eat ham with cheese for breakfast with coffee or tea. The next meal of the day is lunch. Not much is ate at lunch, however it is comparable to American Brunch. During this meal, the typical Russian will eat a salad or a sandwich, it is served with tea. The largest meal of the day is obed where Russians will eat soup with some kind of meat or fish with vegatables or fruit. The meal is finished with desert. For dinner unless a guess is over is relatively light. Usually just bread. However when having a party, Russians will serve a lot more food and serve alcoholic berveges such as vodka and wine. Sterotypes against what Russians eat is that we Americans think Russians will put sour cream on just about anything. While Russians do put sour cream on alot of items such as borusch and bliny they do not put sourc cream on everything. Russians sterotype American food as either tasting like salt or sugar and as result will not go to such fast food places as McDonald's. Even though McDonald's in Russia tastes nothing like McDonald's in North America. These are some example of sterotypes surronding Russian cuisine.

I disagree on this on a few points. Mainly, Russians WILL put sour cream on everything and anything. I watched my boyfriend eat half a package of odd grain crackers with a pint of sour cream. Sour cream with crackers. Let that sink in. Breakfast is also generally pretty big here, because, while most Russians want a large lunch, because of work constraints, and the expense of eating out in Moscow, you might not get to eat between leaving and returning home for the day. But it is true that nobody abroad thinks American food exists... they assume we just eat hamburgers all day. There are a few other strange Russian habits that tie in with health (*cough*cough* MYTHS). For example, drinking cold drinks with food will speed up digestion, and you won't get enough calories/energy from your food (MYTH). Or you can't eat eggs for dinner because they have too much protein (they have about 6grams, versus 42 grams in a steak...)Or taking a bath AFTER you eat will prevent you from digesting your food. And 50ml of vodka with dinner aids in digestion.

Oh, and mayonaise. Russians seem to like and appreciate causes a lot more than we do in America. Grocery stores stock all sorts of yummy garlic, curry, or pepper sauces. But you cannot imagine the strange things they put mayo on here...
