Elementary Russian | Сегодня в лингaфонном кабинете... | Unit 3 Week 2... Какие языки вы знаете? (Урок второй, неделя 2)

In this unit, we're using a few important PowerPoints that explain the formation and use of the prepositional case, and another couple that describe Jakobson's "single stem system" of verb conjugations. Here they are. (We'll work through some of these this week... This is just a "for your convenience" link....... )

Что сегодня наготове...
What's in store today...

First ten minutes:
Spend 10 minutes practicing the words and phrases. Here's the Memrise link to the tomorrow's vocab quiz material to review.

Please print it out or get today's handout.

1) Listen and read along as the диктор reads numbers 1-50. Here is the recording.

Next ten minutes:
Now do this exercise, jotting down the prices in the handout. I only want you to do the first 10. Don't listen more than three times. Here are the questions (they're also on the handout).

Next twenty minutes:
When you're done with the числительные (numbers), consider the verb говори́ть, to speak. It is very similar to verbs like читать, знать, жить that we've already studied, the sole difference being the vowel  in the ending.

Important rule! There are only two conjugational patterns in Russian, 1st (mostly verbs ending in -ать) and 2nd conjugation (mostly verbs ending in -ить).

Сравните!

читáть (1st conjugation)
говорить (2nd)
я
читáю
говорю́
ты
читáешь
говори́шь
он
читáет
говори́т
мы
читáем
говори́м
вы
читáете
говори́те
они
читáют
говоря́т

In говорить and other verbs ending in -ить, the ending vowel is -и- where there's a -е- in verbs like читать that end in -ать. (Complicating things (or not!), the и and the е are pronounced the same
/и/ in these verbs because they are NOT under accent.) The most important distinction: The они form is -ят instead of -ют.

Listen to the two verbs. What's important to take away: There are only two conjugational patterns in Russian, 1st and 2nd conjugation. And these two patterns have very similar endings, they differentiate ONLY IN THE VOWELS. THE VOWELS!

RULE: Comparing first and second conjugational patterns, we can note: Vowels change, consonants stay the same. In almost every respect, all verbs in Russian conjugate similarly.

Last ten minutes:
Finally: Look through this PowerPoint on the prepositional case. We've already encountered it: Я живу во Флориде. Иван живёт в Москве. Now, we'll learn how to change modifiers so they reflect the function and gender of the nouns. "He lives in a BIG CITY." "She studies in a SMALL UNIVERSITY."

Read through the presentation a couple of times, and work with the tutors on the relevant grammar exercises (on the handout) at the tables or at home.  If you need help, reach out to one of the tutors or to an instructor: Send an image of your work (screenshot or your phone) and we can help you!

Второй год... Глава 3... Неделя 2. (SECOND YEAR, Unit 3 Week 2)

ОК, ребята... за работу! To work, to work! The poster says: "To work so well, that comrade Stalin says thank you" hm....

1) Review our new vocab for 10 min! Here is the link

2) Take the quiz! = Напишите квиз!

3) Возьмите хендаут ВОТ ХЭНДАУТ.... и... Take it from the tutor or make sure you download this handout on your device before printing. Do not print it online, it will not display all the assignments properly. Давайте послушаем... A conversation with a taxi driver! Listen! And, if it proves difficult, work with tutors... fun! You'll find the questions on your lab handout (p.2) Вот линк на запись... Link to the recording

3) Садитесь за стол! Поработаем вместе! Let's work a bit on verbs of motion... Take a look at the flowchart on your handout (p.1) that you all know well... All we're adding today is the FUTURE and PAST perfective forms for these verbs, пойти-поехать (that's по- added more or less directly to the words unidirectional verbs ехать и идти--the conjugations are the same... пое́ду, пойду | пое́дешь, пойдёшь...).

4) The grammar quiz NEXT WEDNESDAY: Practice Imperative HERE.

5) Sign up for the oral exam (the link is on Canvas)

И вот песня, которую вам надо выучить наизусть (=Here is the song you need to memorize!)...  Practice verses during the lab with your partner.

А вот еще запись песни с артистами, которые её озвучивали (=and here is a recording of the actors who sang it):

6) Check out this chart on VOM. It will help your understanding. Let's talk about it! Draw something similar to this in your portfolio grammar part. As long as it makes sense to you (boom, a part of your portfolio is done today after the lab, nice, isn't it?)

А теперь... расписание лабораторной работы на сегодня! Что будем делать? And now...
  1. Grab этот хэндаут from the lab table or print it out.
  2. За компьютером... Listen to two разговоры (=conversations) and answer questions that you find on the first page of the handout... Listen to each разговор three times! No more, no fewer! Jot down the answers on the хэндаут that you printed in #1. Разговор 2Разговор 3 (15 minutes)
  3. Прослушайте Диалог 4. (Listen to Dialog 4.) The dialogue is on the handout, too! Where in the dialogue, for instance, do you learn how to praise someone's language ability? \(°Ω°)/ These phrases will be part of your vocabulary quiz.
  4.  READ DIALOG 4 ALOUD with a tutor or a partner or by yourself!
  5. OK, now: Read through the explanations of grammar part of the page 3 of хэндаут. Второй год Language lab: Unit 3, Week 1 Second Year

Привет! Хэллоуин скоро! Halloween is coming up. Make sure you attend the game!!! It's a unique event, it's an experiment, extra credit and cultural credit provided...Do not miss it! Mark your calendar...

Здравствуйте, дорогие студенты!

Окей! За работу! Сначала... распечатайте или загрузите этот хэндаут.

Давайте послушаем! Read along, translate, and fill in answers to the following two dialogues. Do it with tutors or on your own:
1. Можно пройти пешком?
2. Как туда попасть?

Ответьте (=answer!) на вопросы (на хендауте)... И найдите (=find!) фразы-переводы в 3-7 (диалоги). Answer the questions to the dialogues on the handout. Then find the phrases in the dialogues that match the ones in 3-7 Подготовка к разговору (see your handout). These phrases will be on your vocab quiz next Wednesday.

Wheh. Finally. Да уж! =You're telling me! In the final exercise на хендауте, take items from each column and make complete sentences... I go to work on the bus! Ура ура! Before you start jotting down the sentences, here is the rule:
*** ездить (=to go by a vehicle) and ходить (=to go by foot) are multidirectional verbs of motion, meaning they indicate round trips. Он ходит в университет каждый день=he goes to the university(and back home) by foot everyday.

*** conjugation of ездить (II): я езжу, ты ездишь, он ездит, мы ездим, вы ездите, они ездят

***conjugation of ходить (II): я хожу, ты ходишь, он ходит, мы ходим, вы ходите, они ходят

***Destination places +prepositions: use В if the place has a roof (a library, a university building, a theater). Use НА with events and open spaces (a stadium, a lecture, a film)
***Destinations are ACCUSATIVE.

***Modes of transportation always use на + PREPOSITIONAL, if you go by foot say "пешком"
Example: Я хожу в университет пешком, а он ездит в университет на велосипеде

Your vocabulary quiz next Wednesday. Spend 10 min working on this list now...
Your grammar quiz is on Wed in two weeks. Check it out (5 min)

Elementary Russian... LAB, Unit 2: Listening

Добрый день! Мы рады вас видеть! = Good day! Nice to see you.

Check out this week's Muzyka Monday!

OK, к делу!

Dr. Zheltoukhova's section: Grab the grammar quiz handout and write the quiz. It should be pretty straightforward.

Now, get a handout at the lab or download and print out your хендаут here (download your handout )

You will find two listening exercises, Давайте послушаем! Let's Listen! Do those first:

For the first, 2-38 магазин-салон, just listen a couple times to find out the items being advertised. You could circle the things...

The second, 2-39 Магазин <<Мода>> ... just answer briefly the 3 questions, in the margin or below the exercise or the other side of the lab worksheet. Listen carefully for the words you understand and make your judgments accordingly.

This is it for today= ЭТО всё на сегодня (ta-dah!)

Second Year Russian Unit 2 LAB 3

УВАЖАЕМЫЕ СТУДЕНТЫ!

Во-первых (=first,) review the conjugation of the verbs HERE. Work with this Quizlet list of verbs for 10 min in the "study" mode, then take the grammar quiz.

Now, grab the lab handout from the table or print out this lab handout and do tasks 1 and 2.

Теперь, наденьте наушники и прослушайте передачу Радионяни! =Put on your headphones and listen! Радионяня now means "baby monitor" in Russian. But it used to be a radio program for kids...  Everyone "of a certain age" (my age!) knows these episodes. If you're over, say, thirty-five, you grew up with Радионяня at home. The song that starts every episode goes...

Мы рады вас приветствовать, товарищи ребята!Конечно, если дома вы, а не ушли куда-то.
We're happy to see greet you, comrade children!
If you're at home, of course, and haven't gone somewhere...

The rhyme of куда-то and ребята is an excellent rhyme!

Give the song a listen here and write all the words you recognize.

Now listen to a segment: Давайте послушаем program

On the second page of your lab handouts, jot down the answers (in Russian... or English if you have to) to the four questions. Клёво! It's great. Смешно... Very funny! Смешно, а серьёзно! Funny, but serious... as it always was and ever shall be in Russia.

This will take you about half an hour... Трудно! Я знаю!

When you're done... Come to the tables and ask us questions! Get some additional help on aspect and verb conjugations.

Весёлые уроки! Cheerful lessons! Lessons in Happiness!

You can listen to more episodes of Радионяня here.

СПАСИБО! ЭТО ВСЁ!!!
